Biolane Newborn Trial Set with diaper cream, body milk, liquid talc and 2-in-1 gel

Newborn Skincare Routine: What You Really Need in the First 3 Months

Quick answer: A newborn needs four things: a gentle 2-in-1 wash for baths two or three times a week, a no-rinse cleansing water for between baths, a daily moisturiser applied after the bath, and diaper protection at every change. Choose fragrance-free, high-tolerance products that are suitable from birth and introduce them one at a time.

  • Less is more: newborn skin is thinner, loses moisture faster and reacts to fragrance and harsh cleansers.
  • Bathe two or three times a week; top-and-tail with a no-rinse cleanser on other days.
  • Cleanse, dry completely and protect at every diaper change from day one.

New parents are often given long lists of products a baby "needs", and it can be hard to tell what really matters. The truth is that newborn skincare is simple. In the first three months, a small number of gentle, well-chosen essentials and a consistent routine will keep your baby's skin clean, soft and protected. This guide sets out what newborn skin needs, the four essentials worth having, and a routine that fits into a normal day in the Philippines.

Newborn skin is different

A newborn's skin is thinner than an adult's, loses moisture faster, and its protective barrier is still developing during the first months. It is more sensitive to friction, to heat and sweat, and to ingredients such as fragrance and harsh cleansing agents. That is why products made for adults, or even for older children, are not the right choice, and why "less is more" is the guiding principle. Every product you use should be high-tolerance, gentle and suitable from birth.

Less is more: the four essentials

  1. A gentle cleanser for bath time, ideally a 2-in-1 for body and hair that does not sting the eyes.
  2. A no-rinse cleansing water for the face, hands and diaper area between baths.
  3. A daily moisturiser to lock in hydration after the bath.
  4. Diaper care: something to absorb moisture and something to protect and repair.

If you would like to try the routine before buying full sizes, the Biolane Newborn Trial Set contains travel sizes of a 2-in-1 gel, body milk, liquid talc and diaper cream, all high-tolerance formulas designed for the very first days.

A simple daily routine

Morning

Wipe your baby's face, neck folds and hands with a cotton pad and a no-rinse cleansing water, then check and change the diaper. On hot mornings, a quick wipe of the neck and armpits removes overnight sweat.

Bath time, two or three times a week

Newborns do not need a daily bath. Two or three short baths a week, on days when your baby is calm and fed, is enough. On other days, a top-and-tail wash with cleansing water keeps everything fresh. On very hot days a quick rinse with plain water is fine.

After the bath

Pat dry, paying attention to the skin folds, and moisturise all over while the skin is still slightly damp.

At every diaper change

Cleanse, dry completely, and protect.

Bath time for newborns

Keep the room warm, fill the tub with a few centimetres of water at around 37 °C, and keep the bath to five or ten minutes. Use a small amount of a gentle cleanser. The Biolane Baby Body & Hair Wash Gel cleanses skin and hair in one step, is made with 97% natural-origin ingredients, and is clinically tested under medical supervision and suitable from birth. Its super-fatting agent helps prevent dryness. Until the umbilical cord stump has fallen off and healed, stick to sponge baths. Between baths: no-rinse cleansing

A no-rinse cleanser is the newborn parent's best friend, because it cleans without water, without rubbing and without a full undressing. The Biolane Pure H2O Cleanser is a certified-organic micellar cleansing water, 99% natural, enriched with fair-trade organic aloe vera and tested under pediatric supervision. Apply it to a cotton pad and gently wipe the face, body or diaper area; there is no need to rinse. For an even softer, creamier texture, the Biolane Gentle Cleansing Milk cleanses and moisturises in one step, also without rinsing.

Moisturising a newborn

Newborn skin dries quickly, especially in air-conditioned rooms and after bathing. A daily moisturiser applied after the bath, and on any dry days in between, keeps the barrier supple. The Biolane Moisturizing Body Milk is made with 98% natural-origin ingredients and a fragrance free from allergenic substances, and offers a proven 62% increase in hydration eight hours after application. Warm a little between your palms and massage gently all over; it doubles as a lovely bonding moment.

Diaper care from day one

Newborns go through many diapers a day, and the skin under them is where irritation most often starts. At every change: cleanse gently with a no-rinse water or a soft cloth, pat completely dry, then protect. The Biolane Liquid Talc absorbs excess moisture in the diaper area and skin folds with no loose powder, and helps prevent redness and chafing. At the first sign of redness, switch to the Biolane Diaper Changing Cream, which protects, soothes and repairs from the first application thanks to zinc oxide and sweet almond oil.

What to avoid

  • Fragranced or coloured products, including adult body washes and scented wipes.
  • Bar soap and bubble bath, which strip natural oils.
  • Over-bathing and long, hot baths.
  • Loose talcum powder, which can be inhaled.
  • Rubbing the skin dry; always pat.
  • Direct sun. Shade and clothing come first for babies under six months.

Newborn skin changes that are usually normal

Several things can look alarming in the first weeks but are common and harmless. Tiny white bumps on the nose and cheeks (milia) clear on their own. Peeling skin on the hands and feet in the first days is normal as the outer layer sheds. Newborn "baby acne" often appears around three to four weeks and settles without treatment. Cradle cap, the yellowish scales on the scalp, can be softened with a gentle cradle cap shampoo such as the Biolane Cradle Cap Shampoo, and localised dry, rough patches can be helped with the organic-certified Biolane Cicabébé Ointment. You will find every everyday essential in the Care collection.

Frequently asked questions

When can I start using skincare on a newborn?

From birth, as long as the products are designed for newborns, high-tolerance and free from fragrance. Start with the essentials only, introduce one product at a time, and watch how your baby's skin responds.

How often should I bathe a newborn?

Two or three times a week is enough in the first months, with top-and-tail cleansing on other days. In hot weather a quick plain-water rinse in between is fine, followed by moisturiser.

What is the best newborn starter kit?

One that covers the four essentials with formulas suitable from birth: a gentle 2-in-1 wash, a no-rinse cleanser, a daily moisturiser and diaper protection. A travel-size set is a practical way to try the routine before committing to full sizes.
